Challenge

With a strategy of moving increasingly towards a 5s culture, Ocado has been working in partnership with Cidori to meet the challenge of aligning it’s internal ‘Business Excellence’ training model with a fully accredited and nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification. This has required close cooperation in order to achieve the required synergy between a pre-existing internal training matrix and the apprenticeship program to be delivered by Cidori.

Programme

It was agreed that by using the ‘Improving Operational Performance/Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) Level 2’ apprenticeship, the required alignment could be achieved. This programme was tailored to Ocado and as part of the delivery, Cidori linked up with various departments throughout Ocado to ensure that all learners were involved in operational training that blended and complemented the in-house ‘Business Excellence’ training experience.

Results

The program has now been running for 18 months and has successfully implemented a blended learning approach – combining theory, classroom room activities and the practical application of tools and techniques associated with continuous improvement. Cidori’s flexible approach to training has also achieved high attendance rates, with training sessions scheduled to cater for various working patterns, thus causing minimal disruption to operations and at the same time upskilling personnel across all areas of the business. Ocado is now well into the ‘project’ phase of the program and work has progressed beyond simply identifying areas for improvement into practical application – removing non-value added and waste activities from business processes. This approach has aided Ocado to map out a clear and direct return on investment, whilst earning all learners a highly valued qualification.
