Political uncertainty and Brexit delays have seen a widely buoyant construction industry chart a more uncertain course according to recent IHS Market / CIPS UK Construction Total Activity Index reports.
Yet despite the findings, there remains a steady increase in house building. Particularly in growth areas like Birmingham, where demand is greatly outstripping supply for skilled construction labour.
That, coupled with stringent Section 106 stipulations for local jobs for local people, means that house-builders are having a tricky time attracting, recruiting AND training local people into their workforce.

Birmingham was a deliberate location for the Construct a Career pilot as the city exemplifies the recruitment challenges faced by the construction industry. Birmingham is the focus for huge investment, translating into a buoyant construction sector. It’s also an area of high unemployment.
Local jobs for local people
Our Birmingham pilot with O’Neill & Brennan – still in its infancy – has already resulted in 20 newly trained, CSCS card holders, ready to join the sector in the West Midlands. And there are hundreds more jobs waiting to be filled.
As we implement further courses in partnership with O’Neill & Brennan, Cidori is confident that Construct a Career will continue to deliver site-ready new workers, equipped to take their first step towards a career of real opportunity.

Cidori works with a number of large colleges across the country, delivering to an Ofsted Level 1 standard. Since May 2018, along with our training partners we have helped some 200 learners per month successfully through the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)alone.
Candidates for all these courses are unemployed, over 19 years of age and in receipt of either Universal Credit or Job Seekers Allowance. Our partnerships allow us to highlight areas of the country that have a skills shortage. Once this is profiled, the Cidori team will engage with relevant agencies in that region and get people the training and job opportunities they are seeking.
